by Julian Spivey East of Eden (Netflix) – Thursday, October 1 In what feels like a Kazan family tradition, director Zoe Kazan has taken on East of Eden, the John Steinbeck novel her grandfather, Elia Kazan, made a massive hit with in 1955, earning him an Oscar nomination for Best Director. Zoe’s version, a seven-episode miniseries for Netflix, centers on Cathy Ames (Florence Pugh), a supporting character in her grandfather’s adaptation, and her relationship with half-brothers Adam and Charles Trask in Connecticut. The series spans from the late 19th century to World War I. “East of Eden” premieres Thursday, October 1. War – HBO & HBO Max – Thursday, October 1, “War,” created by George Kay in collaboration with HBO and the U.K.’s Sky Television, is a legal drama about two prestigious law firms as they face off in a scandalous divorce case between a tech billionaire and his movie-star wife. The series stars Dominic West and Sienna Miller as the warring spouses, with a supporting cast of Phoebe Fox, James McArdle, Pip Torrens and Nina Sosanya. “War” premieres on Thursday, October 1. Cupertino (CBS) – Thursday, October 8 Showrunners Robert and Michelle King have made magic with actor Mike Colter before in the critically acclaimed, but unfortunately little-seen horror-drama “Evil,” which began on CBS in 2019, before being jettisoned to Paramount+ for its last three seasons. Colter stars in the King's latest drama series as an attorney in Silicon Valley who is fired by the tech start-up that employs him and decides to go scorched earth on the region’s tech companies, representing clients exploited by them. The show will co-star Rachel Keller as his new partner. The Kings should be able to handle big tech better than almost any other showrunners on television. The Lowdown: Season 2 (FX) – Wednesday, October 14 “The Lowdown,” which premiered its first season in the fall of 2025, returns for its second season on Wednesday, October 14. “The Lowdown” showcases Oscar-nominated Ethan Hawke in one of his best roles yet as “truthteller” Lee Raybon, who wants to get into the nitty-gritty of life in Tulsa, Okla., and figure out why things are the way they are. It’s a bit surprising the first season didn’t garner any Emmy love, especially for Hawke, but then again, creator Sterlin Harjo’s critically loved “Reservation Dogs” was mostly ignored by the Emmys too. Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald (Netflix) – Friday, October 16 It’s been more than five years since comedian Norm Macdonald died, and it’s still hard to believe he’s gone. That’s how much Macdonald meant to his fans, and there are a great many of them, especially in the comedy business. That includes director-producer Judd Apatow, who has constructed an “intimate portrait” of the comedy legend, premiering on Netflix on Friday, October 16. Through archival footage and interviews with Macdonald’s friends, Apatow’s documentary will detail the life and career of a comedian so notorious for his privacy that only his family knew he was dying of cancer.
