by Julian Spivey  Photos: HBO, Apple & Fox Summer Under the Stars (TCM) – All August The two best times of the year for Turner Classic Movies are 31 Days of Oscar, when they air nothing but Academy Award-nominated or winning films for the 31 days surrounding the Oscars telecast, and every August when they have their Summer Under the Stars programming. Summer Under the Stars features films by an actor or actress the entire day for the month, with a mixture of old favorites and new entrants to the series annually. This year’s programming schedule includes legends like Humphrey Bogart (August 2), Steve McQueen (August 8), Barbara Stanwyck (August 11), Robert Redford (August 18), Marlon Brando (August 20), Katharine Hepburn (August 23) and James Stewart (August 26). Five actors and actresses are making their Summer Under the Stars debuts this month with Diane Keaton (August 6), George Hamilton (August 10), Marie Windsor (August 21), Bonita Granville (August 25) and Brock Peters (August 28). Best Medicine: Season 1 (Netflix) – Tuesday, August 4 Fox dramedy “Best Medicine,” an American remake of the British hit “Doc Martin,” had a terrific first season this winter/spring, so much so that this very website awarded it as the best comedy series on network TV of the 2025-26 TV season. The show, which has been renewed by Fox for a second season, makes its streaming debut on Netflix on Tuesday, August 4, and I hope new eyes come to it and help it build an even larger fan base. The show stars Josh Charles as Dr. Martin Best, a big city surgeon who’s developed a fear of blood, who becomes a doctor in a small fishing village in Maine. Charles makes for a great curmudgeon, while the Port Wenn city folk give off big Stars Hollow, “Gilmore Girls” vibes. Ted Lasso: Season 4 (Apple TV) – Wednesday, August 5 Apple TV’s “Ted Lasso” was a glorious success for the streamer for its three seasons from 2020-2023, winning the Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series for its first two. It was a three-season plan from series creators Jason Sudeikis, Brendan Hunt, Joe Kelly and Bill Lawrence, and they stuck to it. But there always felt like there was a little bit more in the tank for the show, and Sudeikis and crew must’ve felt the same, with a long-rumored fourth season coming to fruition and premiering Wednesday, August 5, with new episodes over 10 Wednesdays. Season four will look different, as the titular Ted Lasso is now coaching a women’s football team, but most of the major cast is returning, and there are hopes “Ted Lasso” can strike a goal once again. Lanterns (HBO/HBO) – Thursday, August 16 I’m not a superhero guy. I have never been. I’ve tried a few times, mostly with television shows, but nothing has really clicked. So, I’ll admit I’m only here for Kyle Chandler. HBO is hoping to strike a hit with “Lanterns,” in which DC Comics Green Lantern characters Hal Jordan (Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) investigate a murder on Earth that will lead to a wider mystery. “Lanterns” comes from showrunner Chris Mundy and will feature Kelly Macdonald and Nathan Fillion in supporting roles. Conan O’Brien Must Go: Season 3 (HBO Max) - Friday, August 21
Conan O’Brien has long been one of the funniest men on television, but he found out (and so did we as viewers) during his stint on TBS’s “Conan” that he’s also one of the great travelogue hosts. The third season of his travel series for HBO Max premieres on Friday, August 21, and season three sees O’Brien traveling to India, the Netherlands and Morocco.
