I’m a huge fan of Miranda Lambert and consider her to be one of the finest singer-songwriters of today. When it comes to Chris Brown I don’t care one bit for his music and care even less about him as a man. So, what I have to say next might actually come as a surprise to some … When Chris Brown performed not just once, but twice at the Grammy Awards on Sunday, in addition to taking home the award for best R&B album on the live telecast there was a lot of uproar among both fans and celebrities that he shouldn’t have been allowed to perform at the award show following his assault of then girlfriend and fellow Grammy nominee Rihanna three years ago on the eve of the 2009 Grammys. His biggest and most famous critic was Miranda Lambert who tweeted: “And Chris Brown twice? I don’t get it. He beat on a girl” and “Not cool that we act like that didn’t happen. He needs to listen to Gunpowder and lead and be put back in his place. Not at the Grammys.” For those that might not be familiar with Lambert, “Gunpowder & Lead” was a 2007 single of hers about a woman who’s ready to shoot and kill her abusive husband. I don’t disagree with Lambert’s (and others) feelings of Brown by any means. Abusing a woman (or really anybody for that matter) is a disgusting and vile act that only the littlest of people would commit. However, what Brown did certainly doesn’t merit a lifetime ban from the Grammy Awards. There was no denying based on record sales and charting songs last year that Brown was one of the music industry’s most successful acts and based simply off of that he deserved a chance to be at and perform at the Grammys. Thus, I’m certainly not sticking up for Brown the person (as I previously said I don’t have respect for him), but as a performer he was very deserving to be at the Grammys on Sunday. Lambert along with other celebrities (Michelle Branch, Jack Osbourne and “Modern Family” star Eric Stonestreet) who voiced their disapproval of Brown performing at the show should be smart enough to realize that the Grammy Awards are about music and not about how good of a person you are.
